Best known in wet areas, does well in city conditions as far north as Milwaukee. "Cypress knees" occur only near water. Prefers acid soils.Grows to 50' - 70', 25' or more spread.USDA zones 4 -10 They are fast growing, extremely long lived and relatively maintenance free. The cones are (0.5 to 1.41 in) in diameter and consist of 9 to 15 four-sided scales that break away irregularly after maturity. Each scale can bear two irregular, triangular seeds with thick, horny, warty coats and projecting flanges.The number of seeds per cone averages 16 and ranges from two to 34. Medicinal use of : The resin in the cones is used as an analgesic for wounds. Other uses of : The bark has been used to make cordage. Wood - light, soft, not strong, moderately hard, easily worked, straight grained, very durable in damp soil, takes a good polish. It weighs 28 lb per cubic foot.
