Common names : Emory Oak, Black Oak, Holly Oak, Apache Oak, Desert Live Oak, Western Black Oak, Roble Negro, Bellota This is a wintergreen tree in the red oak group, retaining its leaves throughout the winter until new leaves are produced in spring. It can be a large shrub or small tree 30-60 ft. with a round crown, very roughly furrowed black bark and nearly evergreen leaves. Glossy, leathery leaves, arranged in whorls, resemble holly leaves. They drop gradually in the spring with the new foliage appearing soon thereafter. Red acorns with have a yellow cap. It is the most characteristic tree of the oak woodland in mountains along the Mexican border. The acorns (bellotas in Spanish) are only slightly bitter and are gathered and eaten locally. They are also consumed in quantities by quail, wild turkeys, squirrels, and other wildlife. The foliage is browsed by deer and, to a lesser extent, by livestock. Native to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and northwestern Mexico. Zone : Hardy to USDA 8 Medicinal use of : Any galls produced on the tree are strongly astringent and can be used in the treatment of hemorrhages, chronic diarhoea, dysentery etc. Edible parts of : Seed - raw or cooked. A sweet taste, it is an important item of food for the Indians in S. Arizona and northern Mexico and is sold in the local markets there. The seed is up to 2cm long and 1cm thick. It can be dried, ground into a powder and used as a thickening in stews etc or mixed with cereals for making bread Other uses : A mulch of the leaves repels slugs, grubs etc, though fresh leaves should not be used as these can inhibit plant growth. Oak galls are excrescences that are sometimes produced in great numbers on the tree and are caused by the activity of the larvae of different insects. The insects live inside these galls, obtaining their nutrient therein. When the insect pupates and leaves, the gall can be used as a rich source of tannin, that can also be used as a dyestuff. Wood - heavy, hard, strong, brittle, close grained. Of little value commercially, though it is an important fuel in its native range.
